Fun on stage - and in front of it!

The secret of Willo's live success is that the musicians themselves have so much fun on stage, which is transferred to the audience from the very first song.

What you should know about Willo ...

How the school band Will O' The Wisp became Willo after 30 years

The history of Willo began under the former name “Will O' The Wisp” with their first gig on October 16, 1993 in Pforzheim. Since then, Willo has been mixing the classic ska beat with elements of reggae, punk, funk and rock to create his own unique and captivating sound.

Willo has been spreading this sound for more than 30 years at numerous live events throughout southern Germany. As soon as the first song starts, there is no way of stopping him. The energy on stage merges with the energy in the audience and everyone celebrates a big ska party together.

Willo recorded CDs in 1996 and 1998, which have now become collector's items due to their limited edition. The heart of the band, however, are their performances - ska has to be experienced live to feel the full energy!

Dance or die

Willo made a name for himself with his first album, which was released in 1996. The first 5 songs are classics and some of them are still played at concerts today. The title track “Dance or Die” was the very first ska song that Willo composed. This song is still demanded by Willo fans today.

I wanna be like Elvis P.

The second CD, which was released in 1998, is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the King of Pop Elvis Presley. The title song is still part of the band's live repertoire today. Other popular songs: “Rastaman”, “Ska Boom”, “what ya gonna do”, “no idea”, “Mr Bi” and “no idea”. With the last number “Let's have a party”, Willo succeeded in creating a rare ska ballad that attracted a lot of attention. The local music press agreed that this CD would bring Willo a national breakthrough.

Stimmung pur ...

“Wo wir sind, da ist der Spaß” was the title of the Pforzheim newspaper's report on the band's 20th anniversary. Fun, joy of playing, energy and the creation of unique live moments is what Willo still stands for today.

Ska rules the world

From Jamaica to the world ...

Jamaica, late 1950s: an island in the midst of change. After decades of British colonial rule, Jamaica begins to find its own beat. In the streets of Kingston, where the radios are teeming with American rhythm & blues and jazz, local musicians are mixing up a new sound. A little reggae, a pinch of calypso, a hint of soul - and the distinctive offbeat. Ska was born.

The passion of the Jamaican musicians gave rise to something special and unique. The characteristic rhythm, the driving “off-beat” or “upbeat”, left no foot still. Young producers like Coxsone Dodd and Duke Reid recorded the new sound in their studios, and bands like the Skatalites brought it to the stage. Ska was suddenly everywhere. Jamaica was dancing, and the music became the soundtrack to independence.

But the island couldn't keep ska to itself for long. In the 1960s, the sound reached Great Britain, mainly through the many Jamaican immigrants. There, in the heart of London, ska found a new home. The British youth, especially the mods and skinheads, fell in love with the driving beat and rebellious attitude. It was the birth of the 2-Tone movement, named after the label of Jerry Dammers, founder of The Specials. The 2-Tone bands combined ska with punk and new wave and gave it a sharp, social edge. Specials, Madness, The Selecter - they all became icons, and ska grew beyond itself.

The 1980s and 90s - ska was no longer just a Caribbean sound, but a worldwide phenomenon. The so-called Third Wave emerged in the USA: bands such as No Doubt, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish brought ska punk to the charts. It was wild, loud and unmistakable.

But what is the secret behind ska? Why has this music endured for decades and still manages to inspire new generations? Maybe it's the pure fun that sounds from every offbeat. Maybe it's the diversity - ska is not just music, it's a way of life. It unites cultures, breaks down boundaries and celebrates life.

Ska today inspires audiences all over the world and never forgets its roots. And whether you're at a festival in Europe, dancing in a club in South America or on the streets of Kingston, one thing is certain: when the ska beat kicks in, nobody stands still.

So, when the brass section kicks in and the bass starts to groove - get in and be part of the ska universe. Once you're in, there's no turning back.
